What does an assessment involve? We gather information about your child. We ask you to complete a family questionnaire. If we have permission, we also ask for written information from school. Next we work one to one with the pupil or student. This is generally done at one of our consulting rooms but we can assess at your child's school if specifically requested. We complete a range of standardised tests to gather an understanding of general ability, information processing strengths and difficulties, preferred mode of learning, as well as ability to focus and concentrate. We also gain a measure of his/her level of competence with basic literacy and maths. We absolutely hope that he/she will enjoy the assessment process and leave the office smiling. We work hard to achieve this. When the assessment activities are completed the parent(s) and psychologist meet together. The aim of this consultation is to provide feedback, to discuss with you what seems to be the most likely reason for your child's current difficulties and perhaps most importantly to provide suggestions for how you can support your child with his/her learning in the future. We aim to provide solutions and to point you in the right direction. The full assessment and consultation session take three hours in total. Pupils/students all work at slightly different speeds but it generally takes two hours to complete the tests. This is immediately followed by the parent consultation session for which an hour is scheduled. We suggest that your child has a snack and a drink and something relaxing to do while he/she waits. If you think that your child is too young or too active to wait patiently while we have the parent meeting, then we suggest that you arrange for someone to come and look after him/her.The assessment and consultation process is followed up with a full and detailed report. This is sent out within the next three weeks. |
